What Should SEO Cost for a Small Business? (2026)
If you’ve gotten quotes for SEO, you’ve probably seen numbers all over the map — $300/month from someone on Upwork, $5,000/month from a big agency, and everything in between. So what’s reasonable?
Here’s the honest breakdown.
The Three Tiers
Budget ($300–$800/month): Usually a freelancer or overseas team. They’ll handle basics — Google Business Profile optimization, some directory listings, maybe a few blog posts. Fine if you just need the fundamentals covered, but don’t expect a strategy.
Mid-range ($1,000–$2,500/month): This is where most serious small businesses land. You get a real strategy: keyword research, on-page optimization, content creation, local link building, and monthly reporting. The agency actually learns your business.
Premium ($3,000+/month): Full-service agencies with dedicated teams. Content production, technical SEO, digital PR, comprehensive reporting. Overkill for most small businesses, but makes sense if you’re in a competitive market or scaling fast.
What Actually Drives the Price
- Competition. Ranking for “plumber Morristown NJ” costs less than “personal injury lawyer NYC.” More competitors = more work.
- Your website’s condition. A 10-year-old site with technical issues needs more upfront work than a clean new build.
- Content needs. Someone has to write the pages and posts that rank. Either you do it or you pay for it.
- Location targeting. One town is simpler than five counties.
Red Flags
- Guaranteed #1 rankings. No one can guarantee this. Google says so explicitly.
- No reporting. If they won’t show you what they’re doing, they’re probably not doing much.
- Long contracts with no out. Month-to-month or 3-month minimums are reasonable. 12-month lock-ins are not.
- $99/month “SEO.” That’s not SEO, that’s a software subscription with your logo on it.
What to Ask Before You Sign
- What specifically will you do in the first 90 days?
- How do you report results, and how often?
- Who writes the content?
- What happens if I cancel?
A good SEO partner answers these clearly. A bad one dodges them.
The Bottom Line
Most small businesses in New Jersey do well in the $1,000–$2,000/month range with the right partner. Less than that and you’re probably not getting enough to move the needle. More than that and you should be seeing serious content production and reporting to justify it.
The cheapest option is rarely the best value. The most expensive isn’t always either. Find someone who explains what they’re doing in plain English — that’s usually the tell.
